Officers and members of Glen Oaks Neighborhood Association, Ladies and Gentlemen; I am Pete Theisen, I am the Anti Growth candidate.
How big a traffic problem do we have to “GROW”? I drove around Glen Oaks yesterday trying to find this place and I saw five cars in one driveway. What are the car payments in that home's budget?
Sarasota is built-out, not in terms of land/sky area, but in terms of traffic – you can't drive or walk anymore! Our main roads either choke off pedestrian access or they restrict traffic flow. If they are made wider they can't be easily crossed on foot, if they are left the same width car traffic is restricted. Enough already, let's try something else!
We need to concentrate on moving people rather than moving cars. We need passenger trains and neighborhood shuttles to move people.
We could have the passenger shuttle in the length of time it would take to have the vehicles delivered and the drivers and dispatchers hired. The golf courses already use the same type of vehicle, just shorter.
An eight passenger golf-cart neighborhood shuttle network could feed the trains and buses making their use attractive so people will actually ride them. For corner store or in neighborhood trips the shuttle alone would be all anyone needed.
I suggest we send the bill to the friendly people who already hold a third to half of our money, the Federal Government. Failing that, there are several other ways to finance it. We can do it! |
